Day 3: Cold War Across Latin America

Warm-Up:

With your partners, discuss everything you remember from American Studies about the Cold War in Latin America.

Agenda:

1) Discussion of ideals and Cold War.
2)  Video -Here is the video we will be watching:  Cold War Backyard.  On the graphic organizer you will see it broken down by times.  The Cuba section is optional since you have all studied about Cuba in American Studies.
3) Stop and talk after Guatemala section.
4)  Share about Chile and CIA documents.
5)  Video about Chile
6)  In groups, discuss key question.  Find evidence.

Homework:

This is the alternate reading (ch. 38) that is for tomorrow.  Please read and take notes.  We will be discussing the end of the Cold War tomorrow with the documents you will use for the DBQ, so it is a good idea to spend tonight making sure you really have the context for the end of the Cold War.  That will save time on what you will need to do over the weekend.

Warm-Up

Objective:

I can explain how the Cold War played out across the world.
I can name ways in which the United States and the USSR tried to push their particular agenda in different parts of the world.

Agenda:

1. Work around the room with your group to determine how the Cold War played out in Guatemala, the Congo, and in Eastern Europe.  All the stations are up on the drive.
2. Fill in your graphic organizer with ways in which the artifacts increase your understanding.  (7 minutes per station)
3. Complete the summarizer on the back of the sheet.  Then, with your group, determine a creative way to visually represent your findings.  *We may need to complete this tomorrow.)
